UAE Foreign Minister visits India; reviews bilateral ties

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Foreign Minister paid an official visit to India on December 12, 2013. During the visit, UAE Foreign Minister discussed with the Indian Minister of External Affairs, Mr. Salman Khurshid, ways of enhancing bilateral relations to serve mutual interests.

The two ministers also exchanged views on the latest regional and international developments.

During the meeting, Sheikh Abdullah affirmed the U.A.E.'s keenness on boosting prospects of joint cooperation, stressing the importance of expanding avenues of joint investment, particularly in areas of economy, trade, and renewable energy.

For his part, the Indian Minister of External Affairs welcomed his U.A.E. counterpart to India, lauding the existing U.A.E.-India friendship as a role model for strategic partnerships which advance constructive collaboration in all fields for the best interest of the two friendly countries and people.

On December 12, 2013, at the end of the meeting, the landmark Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPA) was signed by Excellency Obaid Humaid Al Tayer, the Minister of State for Financial Affairs of UAE and Mr. Namo Narain Meena, the Minister of State for Finance of India.

Meanwhile, the U.A.E. Foreign Minister also met with Shivshankar Menon, National Security Advisor to the Indian Prime Minister.

UAE is India’s largest trading partner, with the bilateral trade valued at about US$ 75 billion for FY 2012-13. UAE contributes significantly to India's energy security and is the fifth largest supplier of crude oil to India. The UAE is the tenth largest investor in India in terms of foreign direct investments.
