The Discussion was organized by the Delhi based think tank, Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS). The keynote speaker of the Discussion was Prof. V. N Attri, Chair, Indian Ocean Rim Studies (IORS) for the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), University of Mauritius. The Panel discussion was chaired by Ms. Renu pal, Joint Secretary at the India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
During the discussions issues related to development of infrastructure and human resources, poverty alleviation, promotion of maritime transport and related matters, cooperation in the fields of fisheries trade, research and management, aquaculture, education and training, energy, IT, health, protection of the environment, agriculture, disaster management were figured.
Academicians as well as the strategic experts participating into the discussion, suggested that, exchange of information, capacity building and the provision of technical assistance amongst IORA Member States would be an important element for cooperation in enhancing the political will to address the challenges of maritime safety and security. The establishment of a regular forum for dialogue between stakeholders on security and safety should therefore be further explored. They expressed hope that with a proper media management the road map of the next decade would be achieved and a public awareness campaign should be initiated to enhance the people and governments cooperation to fulfill the aforesaid suggestion. |
